I’m Denise Downer, an animation and comic book writer. I’m also a super excited writer for Hello Kitty and Friends Supercute Adventures.
I don’t remember exactly when I first heard about Sanrio being the master creator behind Hello Kitty. But I have a vague memory of being in a gift shop years ago when I saw the name. I was browsing a display of Hello Kitty merchandise – everything from coin purses to ink pens. I believe I saw a tag bearing the Sanrio name. I was drawn to the display because it was supercute and super cheery with its Hello Kitty characters and bright colors.
What Hello Kitty and Friend character is your favorite, or do you relate with the most from the series? It’s hard to pick a favorite character because each character is supercute and entertaining in their own way. But if I have to pick, I’d say my favorite is Hello Kitty. She was the first Sanrio character I came to know. I like that she is the hub around which all the other characters revolve. Even so, she doesn’t pretend to have all the answers and will often accept help from her friends. Hello Kitty also has good intentions and a kind heart. For these reasons, she’s a relatable character, which makes her an all-time favorite.
When did you get started in writing?I started writing when I was in grade school – a long, long time ago. I was a big daydreamer, who loved writing poetry and short stories. When I got older I had a strong interest in writing fun, quirky stories for young readers. As time passed, my interest in writing fiction changed into an interest in writing animation. And here I am, writing for Hello Kitty and Friends Supercute Adventures.
My favorite bake sale treat would have to be chocolate brownies. There’s nothing like biting into an ooey gooey fudgy bar. Brownies were also the first treat I Iearned to bake when I was old enough to start baking. And I did it from scratch. So proud. Although, I have to admit that when I go to a café (much like the Hello Kitty Café) I’m more inclined to order an almond croissant. I’m disappointed when the café doesn’t have any, much like Pompom in Pie in the Sky.
