Sanrio Halloween DIY Pom Pom Garland

Halloween is coming up soon! Let's celebrate spooky season with this adorable DIY Sanrio pom pom garland craft.

Since Kuromi’s birthday falls on Halloween, she’s throwing a spooky costume bash for all her favorite friends. She loves tricks and treats after all! To celebrate I’m sharing this pom pom garland that features four Sanrio characters: Hello Kitty, Pompompurin, Kuromi and Keroppi. This project is made mostly of yarn and felt and would make a super cute addition to your Halloween decor. Grab your friends and let’s get crafting!

Hi friends! My name is Blaire and I’m a craft content creator and photo stylist for my brand, Freshly Fuji. I love using my imagination to bring my cute and colorful ideas to life and hope to spread joy and encourage creativity through my art. You can find my work on my blog, FreshlyFuji and Instagram @freshlyfuji. I’ve loved Sanrio ever since I was a little girl and have the most wonderful memories collecting all of their cute goodies for my room and for school. It’s truly an honor to be working with Sanrio to celebrate Kuromi, the Friend of the Month!

Materials

  • Yarn - white, yellow, black, lime green
  • Felt sheets - pink, red, yellow, lime green, purple, black, white
  • Stiffened felt sheets* - yellow, white, black
  • White gauze bandage roll
  • Mini pom poms - black, pink
  • Glitter fabric paint - silver
  • Printed character images**

Tools

  • Pompom maker
  • Fine point scissors
  • Yarn brush (you can also use a clean pet brush)
  • Toothpicks
  • Tweezers
  • Hot glue gun + glue sticks***
  • Paper plate

Notes:

*Stiffened felt will be used for the ears. It’s totally optional, but does help to keep the ears from flopping around.

**Since pom pom makers come in all sizes, make your pom poms first, then print out the character images to scale. This will make cutting and positioning your felt pieces onto each pom pom much easier!

***If you would like to use an alternative to hot glue, find one designed for felt for the best adhesion.

Instructions

Making a pom pom - You will use this process for each character!

  1. Wrap yarn around each arch of your pom pom maker until it’s completely full. Trim the yarn when you get to the end. Close the pom pom maker.
  2. Using a sharp pair of scissors, cut all the way through the wrapped yarn. Cut a strand of yarn and tie a tight double knot around all the strands.
  3. Remove pom pom from the pom pom maker and trim loose ends.
  4. Use a yarn brush to lightly brush and unravel the ends of the yarn for a softer, fuzzy pom pom. Trim the excess to form a smooth, oval shape. Your pom pom is complete!

Hello Kitty

1. Make a white pom pom as described above. This will be Hello Kitty’s head.

2. Cut out felt pieces referencing your printed image

  • White felt: Small rectangular strip (for hanging)
  • White stiff felt: Two triangle ears
  • Yellow felt: Oval nose
  • Black felt: Two ovals for eyes, six tiny strips for whiskers, a bow, a skull
  • Purple felt: Witch hat
  • Red felt: Hat band
3. Create witch hat
  • Decorate the bow and skull with glitter paint. Using a toothpick helps! Allow to dry before proceeding. Then glue the skull to the center of the bow. Finally, glue the red hat band and bow to the hat.
4. Assemble the pom pom
  • Fold the rectangular strip in half and apply glue to attach the ends. Then insert the loop into the top of the pom pom and secure it with glue.
  • Apply glue to the bottom edges of the ears and attach to pom pom.
  • Place the eyes, nose and whiskers onto the pom pom first with tweezers. Then once you’re happy with the placement, squeeze a blob of glue onto a paper plate. Use a toothpick to apply tiny dots of glue to the pom pom surface before attaching the facial features.
  • Apply glue to the bottom half of the hat and attach it to the top of Hello Kitty’s head. Isn’t she bewitching?

Pompompurin

  • Cut gauze into thin strips. Wrap gauze strips around ears and secure the ends to the back with glue. Apply glue to the inner edges of the ears and attach to pom pom.
  • Place the eyes, nose and mouth onto the pom pom first with tweezers. Then once you’re happy with the placement, use a toothpick to apply tiny dots of glue to the pom pom surface before attaching the facial features.
  • Wrap gauze strips around the head one by one in an overlapping fashion, securing the ends with glue. Continue until the head is covered to your liking.
  • Apply glue to the bottom half of the hat and attach it to the head. It’s now a pom pom Pompompurin!

4. Create Kuromi’s face
  • Place the eyes, nose and mouth onto the white face first with tweezers. Then once you’re happy with the placement, use a toothpick to apply tiny dots of glue to the felt surface before attaching the facial features.

  • Place the two white circles next to each other so they’re touching. Glue the pupils near the middle. Then attach the purple eyelids to the eyes and brow piece over the eyelids. This will connect both eyes. Glue the bolts just behind either side of the eyes.
4. Assemble pom pom
  • Fold the rectangular strip in half and apply glue to attach the ends. Then insert the loop into the top of the pom pom and secure it with glue.
  • Apply glue to the back bottom half of Keroppi’s eyes, then attach them to the top portion of the pom pom.
